Synopsis

“We Bare Bears” is back and just as delightful and heartwarming as any 90’s kids movie. The plot of the episode has the Baby Bears fighting over who gets to play with a basketball until a rogue pizza lands in their laps. They are snatched by a ragtag group of kids who challenge the Bears to a basketball game. Along the way they get help from a Charles Barkley trading card. “Baby Bears Can’t Jump” wastes no time in making full use of its premise.
The episode (and the series itself) never stop to question things like the Baby Bears barely getting to eat, not having a home, or Charles Barkley magically appearing from a trading card. When you realize that they’re playing for food, it reminds you just how melancholy We Bare Bears can be without descending into sadness.
While not without a sizable audience, “We Bare Bears” is one of those Cartoon Network shows that never once appealed to me in any special way (though I would definitely prefer it over the weird and suggestive “Steven Universe”). Although I can see the logic in the arguments of the fans, who love the characters and the endearing warmth that makes it enjoyable, and while I certainly can’t say this thinking is wrong, what I will have to say is that none of this struck any chords with me, and it all lacks a certain spark that makes a show like “The Amazing World of Gumball” great.
Not a bad show by any means, but not a good one either; something I could put up with and be mildly entertained, but not something I’d look forward to seeing in any respect. Maybe I’m missing the point: I know some cartoons go for more subtle humor while others are far more outright in their presentation of comedy, but these types of cartoons have never appealed to me. I don’t watch cartoons to see something that I would see in real life, I watch them for wackiness and over-the-top hilarity that is hardly believable. Cartoons aren’t real life, and that’s why I tend to avoid this and “Craig of the Creek” because they stick to a more realistic environment without showcasing unrealistic situations.
We Bare Bears is one of the funniest modern cartoons I’ve ever seen, manages the wit of old SpongeBob with deep sophistication layered on top. Everything about We Bare Bears just works from the character creation to the setting they live in, not to mention the voice actors. They fit the characters like puzzle pieces. And you care when the bears are upset or can’t get adopted, such heart behind the writing.
